Dancing Into the Next Chapter: Iley's Senior Dance Portrait Session at Forest Park
Senior Dance Photography | St. Louis, MO | Forest Park | St. Louis Art Museum | Jewel Box
There are senior sessions, and then there are sessions that feel like a love letter to everything a person has become. Iley's session was absolutely the latter.
From the moment we started planning her senior portraits, one thing was clear: dance wasn't just something Iley did, it was something she was. And when it came time to capture this incredible milestone, there was really only one way to do it justice.
A Final Chapter and a Beautiful Beginning
Iley is one of those rare seniors who carries herself with a quiet confidence that only comes from years of discipline, artistry, and deep love for her craft. As a graduating senior wrapping up her final year and preparing to step into an exciting new season of life, she wanted her portraits to reflect exactly who she is at her core: a dancer.
This session wasn't about posing in a pretty location and smiling for the camera (though there was plenty of beauty to go around). It was about movement. About telling the story of a girl who has poured her heart into dance and is now standing at the threshold of everything she's worked toward.

Forest Park: A Wonderful Stage for a Dancer
We chose Forest Park in St. Louis for Iley's senior session, and honestly, it couldn't have been more perfect. With its sweeping open spaces, iconic architecture, stunning outdoor scenery, and lots of spots to choose from, Forest Park gave us an incredible variety of backdrops to work with, all of which complemented Iley's movement beautifully.
After scouting out various locations throughout Forest Park, and dodging lots of weddings (hello Saturday in May), we started off at the St. Louis Art Museum (SLAM) on the more contemporary side of the outside of the museum. The speckled walls and concrete steps provide a depth and simpleness that draws your focus on the dancer alone while providing a lovely backdrop. There’s lots of architecture to play with there too! See for yourself!
Our second portion of the session, with an outfit change, was at the Jewel Box. Earlier in the day was a nonstop downpour of rain. Just about two hours before our session was to begin, the clouds parted and the sun began to peak out. The partial cloud coverage and slight haze from the rain earlier in the day provided such a lovely and whimsical environment for a spring dance photoshoot.
Zenith Movement Collective's Inaugural Season
Before stepping into her next chapter, Iley made her mark in a really meaningful way. She finished her senior year dancing with Zenith Movement Collective for their inaugural season, a milestone within a milestone. Being part of a company's very first season is something you carry with you forever. It speaks to Iley's talent that she was part of building something new, something that will grow and thrive long after she's moved on.
That founding-member energy showed up in her portraits. There was a curiosity and clear voice in the way she moved as a dancer who has performed, competed, collaborated, and contributed. A dancer who has earned her story.
What's Next: Lindenwood University
Come fall, Iley will be heading for the halls of Lindenwood University, where she'll be studying dance and psychology.
Lindenwood's dance program is gaining her a student who already knows what it means to commit fully to something. And the dance world is gaining a thoughtful, powerful performer who is just getting started.
Iley, best of luck to this new chapter in your story. I am so excited for you and what’s to come!
For the Senior Dancers: Your Portraits Should Move Like You Do
If you're a high school senior who dances, I want to talk to you directly for a moment.
Your senior portraits are not just a yearbook photo. They are a record of who you are right now at this extraordinary intersection of everything you've worked for and everything you're about to become. The years of early mornings, long rehearsals, recitals, competitions, tears, triumphs, and transformation deserve to be seen.
A standard senior session of leaning and posing doesn't tell your story. But a session built around your movement, your artistry, and the locations that inspire you? That's the kind of portraits you'll look back on for decades.
As a dance photographer based in St. Louis, I specialize in creating senior portraits for dancers that capture movement, emotion, and the full depth of who you are as an artist. Whether you're a ballet dancer, contemporary dancer, hip-hop artist, jazz performer, or anywhere in between, I know how to work with your body, your movement vocabulary, and your personality to create images that feel true to you.
We can shoot anywhere. Forest Park. Downtown St. Louis. Your home studio. A theater stage. Somewhere that means something to you. The location should tell part of your story, just like it did for Iley.
What to Expect from Your Senior Dance Photography Session
Every senior dance session I photograph is custom-built around you. Here's a little of what that looks like:
Before the session, we talk through your vision. The style of dance you love most, the looks that make you feel like yourself, and the locations that feel meaningful. I help you plan everything from your outfits to your shot list so that on the day of your session, you can simply dance.
During the session, I direct with a light touch. I know enough about movement and technique to help you find the angles and lines that photograph beautifully, but I also leave space for the real, spontaneous, alive moments that make dance photography extraordinary. Some of the best images aren't planned. They happen between the planned ones.
After the session, you'll receive a gallery of hand-edited, stunning images that capture you as the dancer and person you are right now, at this once-in-a-lifetime moment.
